1. Abia State University, Uturu

Abia State University, popularly known as ABSU, is a state-owned university of higher learning. It was founded in 1981 in the former Imo State as Imo State University (Uturu, Okigwe). It was Built by Sam Mbakwe, the then Governor of old Imo State.

The university offers over 90 undergraduate and postgraduate across ten colleges. The colleges at the institution are as follows:

The university also has a school of postgraduate studies and several centers and institutes, such as the Center for Entrepreneurial Studies, the Centre for Igbo Studies, the Center for Remedial Studies, the Center for Quality Assurance and Ethics, and so on.

2. Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike

The Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, also known as MOUAU, is one of the universities in Abia State, Nigeria. MOUAU is a federally-owned university in Abia State.

The Institution is located in the well-known Agricultural Training and town of Umudike, about 9 kilometers from Umuahia town, the capital of Abia State. 

The University is one of three agriculture universities in Nigeria, the others being in Makurdi (Benue State) and Abeokuta (Ogun State).

Gregory University, Uturu, is one of the top private universities in Abia State, Nigeria. The institution, named after Pope Gregory I. GUU, was founded in 2012.

Spiritan University is a private university in Abia State, Nigeria. The Institution is officially accredited and recognized by the National Universities Commission, Nigeria.

Spiritan University, Nneochi (SUN) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees, such as bachelor's degrees, in several areas of study.

These three-year-old higher education institutions have a selective admission policy based on entrance examinations and students' past academic records and grades.
